Increased Access at the John Muir National Historic Site

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on April 16, 2021. It is reproduced in full below.

Martinez, CA - Following guidance from the White House, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and state and local public health authorities, John Muir National Historic Site (NHS) is increasing access. The National Park Service (NPS) is working servicewide with federal, state, and local public health authorities to closely monitor the COVID-19 pandemic and using a phased approach to increase access on a park-by-park basis.

Beginning April 21, 2021, John Muir NHS will reopen access to:

* John Muir’s historic home for limited, family group tours (increased capacity).

* The Visitor Center gift shop which is operated by Western National Parks Association.

* Strentzel/Muir gravesite open M-F 10:30 to 4:30 for pedestrians and bicyclists and weekends by ranger led tour as staff are available.

In addition, the following spaces continue to be available:

* Mt. Wanda Trails - during daylight hours.

* John Muir orchard and the surrounding picnic areas - open 7 days a week, 10 AM to 5 PM, following the same hours as the historic home and visitor center. John Muir NHS is located at 4202 Alhambra Avenue, Martinez, CA 94553.

With public health in mind, the following facilities remain closed at this time:

* Martinez Adobe (closed due to seismic instability)

The health and safety of our visitors, employees, volunteers, and partners continues to be paramount. At John Muir NHS, our operational approach continues to be centered on examining each facility function and service to ensure those operations comply with current public health guidance and are regularly monitored. We continue to work closely with the NPS Office of Public Health using CDC guidance to ensure public areas and workspaces are safe and clean.

A safe and enjoyable park experience begins at home. The NPS encourages visitors to plan their visit by checking the park’s website and social media for current conditions and travel tips. The CDC has offered guidance to help people recreating in parks and open spaces prevent the spread of infectious diseases. We ask the public to be our partner in recreating responsibly, by following CDC and state and local guidance, social distancing, and wearing a face covering when social distance cannot be maintained.

Details and updates on park operations will continue to be posted on our website www.nps.gov/jomu and social media channels. Updates about NPS operations will be posted on www.nps.gov/coronavirus.
