Yukon-Charley Rivers National Preserve Fire Management staff will conduct fuels reduction projects from Tuesday, June 8 to Friday, June 18 at sites along the Yukon River, Charley River, and Coal Creek drainages. If weather conditions allow, five piles of brush will be burned in the Ben Creek Drainage. The piles are located three nautical miles east of Coal Creek Airstrip (L20), 58 nautical miles northwest of Eagle, and 40 nautical miles southeast of Central, Alaska.
The piles consist of trees and brush not suitable for firewood. The debris was created during fuels reduction projects that will aid in wildland fire protection to increase visitor and employee safety while providing defensible space for the preserve’s historical structures.
National Park Service Fire Management staff will be on-site to monitor the burning. Smoke may be visible from passing aircraft or from the Yukon River. The piles are expected to burn up to three days.
