Whiskeytown, CA - Whiskeytown National Recreation Area seeks public comments on proposed alternatives to the park’s long-term Trails Management Plan. The plan culminates years of thought and research by park staff and partners to improve the visitor experience and sustainability of the national recreation area's trail network. Comments will be analyzed and incorporated in the plan as appropriate. Public input is encouraged and welcomed from June 8th to July 8th. Please submit your input on the proposed plan here: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/WHIS_Trails_Plan.
The proposed action will expand trail opportunities within Whiskeytown from the existing 70 miles to a total of 87 miles. Specifically, over the course of the next several years, the proposed action will create a new paved, multi-use trail along the southwest side of Whiskeytown Lake to improve access. This proposed trail will be 8.3 miles in length. A new trail along the Shasta Divide on the east side of the park will also be created. Finally, the Trails Management Plan will involve rerouting certain sections of existing trail to make them less erosive and more maintainable and accessible. The public is invited to read and review the entire Trails Management Plan document by using the link above.
“Balancing the recreational wants and needs of the public with the conservation of land and water is key," noted Park Superintendent Josh Hoines in a statement. “Whiskeytown’s Trails Management Plan seeks to strike the right balance."
In addition to submitting input on the National Park Service website link above, the public is welcome to participate in the online virtual public meeting scheduled for Wednesday, June 23, from 6 pm to 7:30 pm at the following link: https://bit.ly/2SaWmIV.
