On Saturday, August 7, 2021 The park was pleasantly surprised to receive a brief visit from the Alaska Branch of the Army National Guard, Recruiting and Retention Battalion, Recruitment Sustainment Program.The 43 uniformed visitors have enlisted in the Army National Guard and most participants will be in this program for three to six months in preparation for Basic Training at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (Anchorage, AK).Participants came from all over the state of Alaska, and many have never been in Sitka before.
In line with the National Guard's “Live here, Serve Here" philosophy, a goal of their visit was to become familiar with the community. The time the soldiers spent in the park allowed them the opportunity to learn about the cultural history of the community as well as their own connection to the military history of Sitka, and the park.
