SPRINGDALE, UT - On Friday, Oct. 1, Search and Rescue operations at Zion National Park for missing hiker John Fiske Burg are ongoing and the Canyon Overlook Trail and Pine Creek Canyon remain closed.
Zion National Park Rangers along with Washington County Sheriff’s Office are requesting your assistance in the locating of Mr. Burg. Mr. Burg is 79 years old, 5’9" and 220 lbs. He has brown hair, brown eyes, and no facial hair. He may possibly be wearing the following items: light yellow shirt, his backpack is dark in color older backpack with a two-way radio hanging from the left shoulder strap, shorts, black over light red Salomon ankle high hiking shoes, and a white visor hat with neck guard. Mr. Burg is also known to use two trekking poles black over silver.
Please see the attached updated flyer with updated photos. The photo with Mr. Burg sitting with his trekking poles, was taken on September 27th the day before he went missing.
Mr. Burg was last seen on September 28th, 2021, at approximately 7:00 a.m. MT leaving the La Quinta hotel in Kanab, Utah. Burg is staying there with a group of 50 hikers and stated he may hike the Canyon Overlook trail. Burg's vehicle was found at the trailhead of the Canyon Overlook Trail. It is unknown at this time when Burg arrived at the trailhead.
