INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK: Families and students, birders and scientists, go out on an annual mission to count birds on a specific date in a specific area - often before dawn. Audubon and other organizations will use the data collected in this longest running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations and to guide conservation action.
Indiana Dunes National Park will be facilitating the Indiana Dunes West (INDW) circle count on Wednesday, December 29. The circle is located in the northeast parts of Lake and the northwest parts of Porter County. Bird feeder counts of individual homes inside this circle also bring in welcome data.
Registered participants can count anytime within the 24-hour period inside the INDW circle and submit their data to count facilitator, Christine Gerlach. The Indiana Dunes National Park is one of 423 units of the National Park System ranging from Yellowstone to the Statue of Liberty. Located in Northwest Indiana, the park includes 15 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline and 15,000 acres of biodiverse beaches, woods, prairies, and marshes.
