INDIANA DUNES NATIONAL PARK: Indiana Dunes National Park and Indiana Dunes Tourism have partnered to offer Drop-In Volunteering, a no-hassle volunteer option for those looking to help out at the Indiana Dunes. Opportunities are available nearly every day of the week and include stewardship, restoration, park clean-up, and more.
On the third Saturday of every month, from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm, meet at the Park Connection Office, located next to the Bailly/Chellberg parking lot, On February 19th join in for a morning of stewardship in your national park. Projects vary by season, but can include working on invasive species, land and building restoration, or preparing for special events. Visit www.indianadunes.com/volunteer for this month’s project details.
There are other opportunities to help. Daily, from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, stop by the Indiana Dunes Visitor Center located at 1215 North State Road 49, Porter, Indiana or the Paul H. Douglas Center for Environmental Education at 100 North Lake Street, Gary, Indiana for the “Trash Trekkers" program. Grab a bag at either center and help keep our beaches and trails clean.
No formal commitment is necessary; simply drop-in at any of these locations during program hours to get started. Remember to dress appropriately for the work you will be doing; wear comfortable outdoor clothing and depending on the season, bring sunscreen, bug spray and water. The national park will provide gear and training to anyone interested in lending a hand to help preserve the Indiana Dunes.
