Summer Jobs are available to high schoolers at Whiskeytown through the Youth Conservation Corps program

Whiskeytown, CA - Whiskeytown National Recreation Area is currently accepting applications for its 2022 Youth Conservation Corps summer program. This program offers a total of three young men and three young women from Shasta County employment in an outdoor environment performing conservation work. Participants must be ages 15 through 18. Applications may be obtained at career counseling offices at Shasta, Foothill, Enterprise, West Valley, U-Prep, Central Valley or Anderson High Schools, and at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area Headquarters at 14412 Kennedy Memorial Drive.

Dates of Program: June 27th to August 12th (excluding Monday July 4th)

Reporting Location: There will be two crews of three enrollees each. All participants must bring their own lunch and provide their own transportation to and from park headquarters. Transportation will be provided from these locations to various work sites each day.

Hours of Work: Enrollees will start at 7:00 am and end at 3:30 pm, Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.

Salary: Enrollees will be paid $15.00 per hour (California minimum wage).

Description of Work: Projects include construction and maintenance of trails, lake litter pickup, recycling, grounds work such as cleaning out ash from BBQ’s, fire pits, and ash bins, invasive vegetation species removal, and maintenance around historic structures. Participants will be required to do hard physical work that may be difficult and repetitive, hike long distances over steep and rugged terrain, and may be exposed to insects, poison oak, adverse weather, and difficult working conditions.

How to enroll: To apply, youth meeting the qualifications should complete the Youth Conservation Corps application form and return it to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area post marked no later than April 30th. This application is available in a fillable PDF at. Applications have also been emailed to all High School counselors in Shasta County. Applicants are encouraged to fill out the application electronically. Both the signature of the applicant and a parent or guardian is required. This can be done either electronically or by printing the completed form and then signing. Applicants will be selected on a lottery and will be notified of selection. Demographic information such as age, race, and family income is not used in the selection process. Applications returned to Whiskeytown National Recreation Area are only for the Whiskeytown program. To apply to programs with other parks or agencies you must submit your application to them directly.
