Memorial Day Weekend saturation patrol at Lake Mead National Recreation Area

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on May 26. It is reproduced in full below.

BOULDER CITY, Nevada - On the evening of Sunday, May 29, National Park Service (NPS) rangers will partner with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s (LVMPD) DUI Strike Team to conduct a saturation patrol in Lake Mead National Recreation Area near Boulder Beach on Lakeshore Road.

Saturation patrols are a large number of law enforcement officers patrolling specific areas to help reduce and prevent drunk-driving related incidents through increased patrols.

In 2021, there were 72 DUI-related citations and arrests made in the park and that number is on the rise. In the first five months of 2022, rangers have responded to more than 50 DUI-related calls. The NPS and LVMPD are committed to reducing and preventing this trend from continuing to grow.

Visitors are reminded to always have a valid driver’s license, registration and proof of insurance in their possession to keep a potential traffic stop timely and orderly for both rangers and other park patrons.

Driving under the influence is a dangerous risk with potentially deadly consequences. Even small amounts of alcohol can significantly impair one’s driving abilities. If you or someone you know intends to consume alcohol at Lake Mead over Memorial Day Weekend, help park rangers keep the roadways safe with these recommendations:

* Make prior arrangements to get to and from the park safely,

* Find a sober driver who can get you home,

* Take the keys from anyone who attempts to get behind the wheel after drinking,

* Call 911 if you witness a drunk driver.
