Unsung Heroes Event at Fort Stanwix

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 3. It is reproduced in full below.

On Saturday, August 6, the park will be hosting an 18th century-style blacksmith, tinsmith, and surgeon at the reconstructed fort. The event highlights some of the skilled professionals whose expertise was essential to the outcome of the 1777 siege of Fort Stanwix/Schuyler. The event is free, and runs from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, and the blacksmith, tinsmith and surgeon will be presenting programs and demonstrations all throughout the day.

“The practical side of sieges and battles is often overlooked in the general histories of these events," said Park Ranger William Sawyer, “Unsung heroes repaired cannons, treated wounded soldiers, and did many other tasks to help the fort survive the siege."

All are welcome at the fort on August 6 to help celebrate some of history’s “unsung heroes." Other events that day will be taking place at and around the park at 4:00 pm, 7:00 pm, and8:30 pm in cooperation with the Rome Historical Society - Friends of the Fort, the Oneida Indian Nation, and the New York State Office of Park, Recreation and Historic Preservation.
