Night Sky Program at Fort Union--Saturday, August 27, 2022

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Aug. 22. It is reproduced in full below.

Watrous, NM: Fort Union National Monument will be offering a night sky program on Saturday night, August 27 that will feature both telescope astronomy and a discussion about American Indian astronomy. The solitude, remoteness, and clear air of Fort Union National Monument make it an ideal place for observing a natural dark sky. We will be using both naked eyes and telescopes to appreciate different interpretations of the night sky.

Park gates will re-open at 7:00 pm for those who would like to enjoy a twilight picnic. The formal night sky program begins at 8:30 pm near the visitor center and should finish by 10:30 pm. Please bring water and a light jacket.

If the weather appears dubious or rainy that evening, please call the park at 505-425-8025, ext. 0 to verify that the program will be occurring before driving out to the park.

Fort Union National Monument is west of Watrous, NM. Take exit 366 off I-25 and follow NM 161 eight miles west to the Monument. For more information visit us on online at www.nps.gov/foun or by contacting the park at 505-425-8025, ext. 0.
