The U.S. Government Accountability Office has recommendations for Congress and other government agencies in an oversight report about climate change and the federal government's greenhouse gas emissions reduction efforts.
In its Climate Change: Oversight of Federal Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Efforts report issued Sept. 29, GAO highlighted domestic efforts made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 provided carbon capture and storage technology and energy efficiency investments.
"Each year the federal government reports spending billions of dollars on activities related to reducing emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide," GAO said in the report. "These activities include investments in energy efficiency and technologies to capture carbon dioxide before it enters the atmosphere. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 provided additional billions of dollars in funding and tax credits for such efforts."
Recommendations from the report included technology, energy consumption and efficiency, as well as domestic and international policies. suggested Congress consider "a mechanism to provide greater oversight and accountability" in its carbon capture and storage projects and that the U.S. Department of Energy "improve CCS project selection and negotiation and more consistently administer projects."
GAO also recommended the U.S. Bureau of Land Management consider requiring gas capture plans on federal lands, according to the report.
The GAO will continue overseeing the Inflation Reduction Act and the emissions reduction efforts, the report said. The U.S. Global Change Research Program and the National Academies reported greenhouse gasses in the atmosphere are going to continue to have effects on the climate system, thus efforts must continue.
