Administrator Samantha Power’S Meeting And Signing Of Power Africa Mou With Jutta Urpilainen, Commissioner For International Partnerships, European Commission

Today, Administrator Samantha Power met with Jutta Urpilainen, European Commissioner for International Partnerships. Administrator Power and Commissioner Urpilainen signed a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Power Africa, the U.S. government-led partnership coordinated by USAID that brings together the collective resources of more than 175 public and private sector partners to increase the number of people with access to electricity in sub-Saharan Africa.

This MoU allows for closer collaboration between Power Africa and the European Union to increase the production, access to, and use of sustainable energy solutions to address poverty, climate change, and energy insecurity in sub-Saharan Africa – this step advances our shared commitment to fulfill the G7’s Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment agenda and invest in infrastructure.

Administrator Power and Commissioner Urpilainen also agreed to support governments delivering for their people, especially in addressing immediate and long-term food security needs. They also discussed the importance of a prosperous, free Ukraine and the need to maintain support for Ukraine while also responding to the immediate and long-term needs of partners around the world.

Finally, the Administrator thanked the Commissioner for the EU’s $715 million pledge for the 2023-2025 period at the Global Fund's Seventh Replenishment Conference – a 30 percent increase on its previous three-year pledge.
