ORP Achieves Significant Step Toward Direct Feed Low-Activity Waste Approach

The following press release was published by the U.S. Dept. of Energy, Office of Environmental Management on June 15, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

RICHLAND, Wash. - Workers recently achieved an important step toward realizing EM’s Direct Feed Low-Activity Waste approach, which is intended to begin treatment of Hanford’s tank waste as soon as 2022. The WTP team completed testing of the NLD system and transferred treated water through underground piping to the Treated Effluent Disposal Facility, located in the 200 East area. The NLD system will collect effluent from various streams in the WTP processing facilities. The team coordinated the discharge with the site’s tank operations contractor Washington River Protection Solutions.
