Hanford Workers Clear Way to Remove Contaminated Soil

The following press release was published by the U.S. Dept. of Energy, Office of Environmental Management on Aug. 17, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

RICHLAND, Wash. - Hanford Site workers finished removing combustible material and contaminated loose debris recently from the airlock floor of the 300 Area ’s 324 Building, meeting a key 2017 Richland Operations Office performance goal. The airlock allows access to adjacent rooms called hot cells, where employees remotely handled radioactive substances.

Clearing that waste is necessary before workers can remove the contaminated soil beneath the building. Workers took out 16 bags of waste, including plastic and contaminated clothing, so they can install remote-operated soil removal equipment in a nearby hot cell. The soil must be removed before the building can be demolished.
