RICHLAND, Wash. - These canines may look cute, but their recent trip to the Hanford Site was all business.

Hanford Patrol officers from EM Richland Operations Office (RL) contractor Mission Support Alliance hosted 87 law enforcement teams from across Washington state to promote education and safety of their canine teams. The trainings took place at the Volpentest Hazardous Materials Management and Emergency Response (HAMMER) Federal Training Center.

“HAMMER is an invaluable training resource for law enforcement agencies across the state," said Jill Conrad, RL program manager at HAMMER. “Thanks to HAMMER’s unique facilities and training props, we were able provide an environment for these teams to come together in a central location, share ideas about safety, and ensure the canines teams receive first-class training."

The training was part of the Washington State Police Canine Association’s Fall Seminar, which emphasizes criminal apprehension, drug enforcement, and bomb detection.

“I would like to thank Hanford Patrol, especially Capt. Robert Morrow, who led the seminar, HAMMER staff, and everyone that worked with our organization to make the seminar a success," said Paul Gorman, the association’s president.

Hanford Patrol's canine program provides enhanced detection capability to prevent the transport of unauthorized explosive substances or devices onto the Hanford Site.
