EMMETT, Idaho - The Bureau of Reclamation is lowering the reservoir behind Black Canyon Diversion Dam to allow crews to safely perform routine maintenance activities in December 2022. The drawdown began in early October and will continue until Nov. 13 when the water surface elevation reaches 2,465 feet-32.5 feet below normal full pool elevation. The reduced elevation will be maintained through December. The public is advised to exercise caution around the reservoir and riverbanks during the drawdown period.
Reduction in surface elevation is done yearly during the post-irrigation season. The elevation levels are significantly reduced less frequently to conduct routine mandatory inspections of the water intake structures and associated equipment. Once maintenance activities are complete, the reservoir will be returned to its regular operating elevation.
Black Canyon Diversion Dam is located on the Payette River about five miles northeast of Emmett, Idaho. It was completed in 1924 and is a multipurpose facility that provides irrigation and hydropower.
