DOE Environmental Management: DOE 'awards $30 million to minority serving institutions to invest in next generation STEM leaders'

U.S. Department of Energy announced $20 million in financial assistance grants to minority serving institutions in three states.

The grants in South Carolina, Tennessee and Washington will serve to develop the next generation of STEM students, according to a Nov. 7 DOE news release. The financial assistance grants will be distributed by DOE's Office of Environmental Management's Minority Serving Institutions Partnership Program.

"Leveraging the full potential of America's best and brightest means including students from every pocket of the nation, and of all races and ethnicities," U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said in the news release. "With today's investments, DOE is following through with our previously announced commitments to MSIs to remove barriers and unlock opportunities for millions of Americans — inspiring the next generation of science and technology leaders and positioning America to lead the world in the industries of the future, from artificial intelligence and clean energy to quantum computing and advanced engineering."

DOE Environmental Management also announced the grants in a Twitter post.

"@ENERGY awards $30 million to minority serving institutions to invest in next generation STEM leaders," the Twitter post said. "The grants will develop highly qualified science, technology, engineering and math students and foster a well-trained and inclusive workforce!"

Granholm credited President Joe Biden and DOE for the initiative in her post on Twitter.

"@POTUS and @ENERGY are committed to inspiring the next generation of science and technology leaders and positioning America to lead the world in the industries of the future, from artificial intelligence and clean energy to quantum computing and advanced engineering."
