APRIL 9, 2018 - The U.S. Census Bureau moved into the next phase of the 2018 Census Test today in Providence County, R.I., when it started hand-delivering questionnaires to about 1,800 households. More than 260,000 households in Providence County have already received mailed requests to respond to the census test.
The Update Leave Operation is designed to help enumerate areas where the Census Bureau has determined that it is more effective to hand deliver the questionnaire packets. This is widely used in rural areas. Field staff will leave a questionnaire packet at housing units to entice residents to respond online, by mail or by phone. Census staff are also updating maps and address information for these households.
The Update Leave Operation will take place through May 4. All households that do not respond to the census test will be visited by census takers starting May 9 through July 31.
The 2018 Census Test is a critical part of preparations for the nation’s upcoming 2020 Census. An updated address list ensures an accurate and complete count for the nation in 2020.
