The U.S. Census Bureau released the Multiple Jobholders Report. This report uses data from the 2014 Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) to examine the characteristics of people who held multiple jobs in 2013. The report looks at jobholders by sex, industry, occupation and work schedule. In addition, the analysis includes seasonality of multiple jobholding.
Other highlights include:
* While the majority of workers in the United States have one paid job at a time, multiple jobholders comprise an established portion of the labor force.
* Women are more likely than men to hold more than one job at the same time.
* The majority of multiple jobholders have only two jobs at a time.
* The most common schedule among workers with multiple jobs was to work full time at the main job and part time at their other job(s).
* Multiple jobholders find additional work in industries and occupations where they already have experience and they are unlikely to make many job changes throughout the year.
The SIPP is a longitudinal survey that samples the same individuals over a four-year period. The survey provides comprehensive information about the income and program participation of individuals and households in the United States. SIPP collects data and measures change for many topics including: economic well-being, family dynamics, education, assets, health insurance, child care, and food security.
