U.S. Census Bureau Releases General Statistics From the Annual Survey of Manufactures

The 2018 Annual Survey of Manufactures (ASM) provides data about manufacturing that are crucial for accurate estimates of domestic production and productivity and to making sound decisions on economic trade policies. Companies, business analysts and trade associations use this data in planning investments, production and marketing.

This report presents data at the two- through six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) levels on employment, payroll, cost of materials, operating expenses, shipments and receipts for services, value added and inventories.

Highlights include:

* The Transportation Equipment Manufacturing subsector (NAICS 336) is the first manufacturing subsector to exceed $1.0 trillion dollars in total value of shipments.

** The total value of shipments for the Light Truck and Utility Vehicle Manufacturing industry (NAICS 336112) was $216.6 billion.

** The total value of shipments for Aircraft Manufacturing (NAICS 336411) exceeded $159.5 billion dollars.

* The total value of shipments for the Petroleum Refineries industry (NAICS 324110) was $636.2 billion.

* The total value of shipments for the Iron and Steel Mills and Ferroalloy Manufacturing industry (NAICS 331110) was $105.2 billion. There were 69,428 production workers in this industry.
