-The U.S. Census Bureau in January began releasing industry data from the 2017 Economic Census for all sectors by state, metropolitan area, county and place. We released final data for the Mining, Quarrying, and Oil and Gas Extraction (NAICS 21), Manufacturing (NAICS 31-33), and Construction (NAICS 23) sectors on Aug. 20, officially wrapping up the Geographic Area Statistics.
The 2017 Economic Census is one of the first Census Bureau programs to publish data using the new 2017 North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Codes have changed for a few industries but most are the same as the 2012 NAICS.
In 2017, Texas reported the highest value of shipments of all the states in the Mining, Quarrying, and Oil and Gas Extraction sector, at $137.8 billion. The Oil and Gas Extraction (NAICS 211) subsector is the largest subsector in this sector and state, and Mining (except oil and gas extraction) (NAICS 212) is the largest subsector in this sector in Nevada.
As mining, manufacturing, and construction sectors thrived at the state level, other industries saw major changes at the state and national level from 2012 to 2017.
Changes from 2012 to 2017:
* California reported the highest increase in Construction revenue, from $148.5 billion to $242.3 billion.
* The Manufacturing sector continued to be the largest sector in terms of increase in value of shipments in three states - Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee.
* The Wholesale Trade sector reported the largest increase in sales of all sectors, from $7.9 trillion to $8.7 trillion. Wholesale businesses in California reported the largest increase in sales during this period, from $969.2 billion to $1.2 trillion.
In 2017:
* The Retail Trade sector was the top sector in Hawaii, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Nevada and Maine by revenue.
* The Professional, Scientific and Technical Services was the largest sector (by revenue) in only one geography, the District of Columbia. This sector includes many technology-related and consulting businesses.
