Memories of cookies and cider, sleigh rides, homemade gifts and ornaments, and warm gatherings of friends and family are all part of the spirit of Christmas in the Ozarks. Ozark National Scenic Riverways will celebrate the holiday season with special open house events at Eminence and Akers in December.
An Ozark Christmas Celebration will take place at Alley Spring on Saturday, December 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring the family to see the Old Red Mill decked for the holidays. If you arrive before dusk, the holiday decorations near the mill and stunning backdrop of Alley Spring in the winter provide the perfect setting for a holiday photo you can cherish for years. After dark, lanterns will light the pathways to the mill where you can visit with old friends and new, sing Christmas carols by candlelight, and munch cookies with hot drinks. You can even make a simple holiday ornament to take home. Warm up your singing voice and dress warm for the festivities. Alley Spring is located six miles west of Eminence on State Route 106.
The Mt. Zion Christmas Celebration will be held at the Mt Zion Church on Sunday, December 11, from 2 to 4 p.m. Enjoy a special Christmas program and holiday carols while sampling Christmas cookies and sipping hot drinks. Those with a connection to the Akers community will share holiday stories from long ago. All are invited to attend and learn more about traditional Christmas celebrations on the Current River. Items for a special display about the Akers Community will be provided by the Shannon County Museum. Those attending are encouraged to bring a special ornament and a memory to share. Mt. Zion Church is located approximately one-half mile north of Akers Ferry on State Route K in northern Shannon County.
