ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. - A Cape May County, New Jersey, man was arrested at Atlantic City International Airport (ACY) Sunday morning, Nov. 19, after Transportation Security Administration officers caught the man trying to carry a butterfly knife that he had affixed beneath the lining of his roller bag in an effort to artfully conceal the knife from the TSA officers who were working at the checkpoint.
TSA officers detected the knife inside the man’s carry-on bag as his bag was viewed on the checkpoint x-ray monitor. When the TSA officers searched the bag to remove the knife, they could not immediately locate it in the bag, so they sent it back through the x-ray machine and still the image of the knife appeared on the monitor. Upon further inspection, the knife was located under the lining of the suitcase, attached to the retractable metal pull-handle. TSA officers contacted the New Jersey State Police, who responded to the checkpoint, confiscated the knife and arrested the man, a resident of Villas, New Jersey, on a weapons charge. There was no impact to airport operations.
As a reminder, no knives are permitted past the checkpoint. Passengers are responsible for the contents of bags they bring to the security checkpoint, and TSA’s advice to passengers is to look through bags thoroughly before coming to the airport to make sure there are no illegal or prohibited items.
