The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently announced that the Cyber Safety Review Board will review attacks by a global organization of hackers.
According to a Dec. 2 DHS news release, the CSRB will review recent attacks linked to Lapsus$, a worldwide hacker collective with extortion as its primary goal. According to reports, Lapsus$ has effectively penetrated a number of businesses across a variety of industries and geographical regions by using methods to get around a variety of widely utilized security protections.
“The Cyber Safety Review Board has quickly established itself as an innovative and enduring institution in the cybersecurity ecosystem,” Secretary Alejandro N. Mayorkas said in the release. “With its review into Lapsus$, the board will build on the lessons learned from its first review and share actionable recommendations to help the private and public sectors strengthen their cyber resilience.”
The CSRB will review the attack methods of Lapsus$ in order to develop recommended strategies for how organizations can protect their companies, customers and their employees from these type of attacks, according to the release.
“Lapsus$ has targeted some of the most sophisticated companies on the planet,” CSRB Chair and DHS Under Secretary for Policy Robert Silvers said in the release. “In the wake of major incidents, the Cyber Safety Review Board conducts authoritative fact-finding and issues recommendations that can have immediate impact on the security of the ecosystem. As a unified effort between government and industry, we will advise on how to repel and respond to these types of cyber-enabled extortion attacks.”
