Vilsack: New nutrition center will 'develop and deliver science-based solutions'

The U.S Department of Agriculture recently unveiled its Agricultural Science Center of Excellence for Nutrition and Diet for Better Health, which will help advance the Biden administration’s effort to battle cancer.

According to a Dec. 5 USDA news release, a goal of the center is to jump-start and enhance research, particularly in underserved areas.

“The virtual center will connect existing resources, including people and programs, to leverage expertise and increase coordination and cooperation,’ Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack said in the release.

According to the USDA release, the facility will target efforts to advance the research of chronic diseases related to diet, with cancer as just one of the diseases to come under scrutiny. The release also cited World Cancer Research Fund data that found 30% to 50% of al cancers are preventable by maintaining a healthy diet.

The release noted the center's goal is to improve the health and outcomes of individuals living in underserved areas, the release reported.

“ASCEND will bring together scientists, partner organizations and communities to develop and deliver science-based solutions that improve the health and well-being of all Americans, particularly in underserved communities,” Vilsack said in the release.
