Meeks Issues Statement on Release of Brittney Griner from Wrongful Detention in Russia

The following press release was published by the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on Dec. 8. It is reproduced in full below.

Washington, DC - Representative Gregory W. Meeks, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement upon the release of Brittney Griner, an American WBNA player wrongfully imprisoned in Russia since February of this year.

“I am thrilled by the release of Brittney Griner, and I commend the Biden Administration for its tireless efforts to return her home to her loved ones. While I am overjoyed by today’s news, I am also mindful of the agony felt by Paul Whelan and his family because of the Kremlin’s cold and callous political games. This Committee will not rest until Paul and other wrongfully detained Americans around the world are brought home to the United States and their families, where they belong."
