Cooper's Hawk

Named after an 1800's naturalist, William Cooper, the Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) can have a wingspan of up to 36", a little smaller than other common hawks. It feeds mostly on birds, but also feeds on other creatures such as rabbits, squirrels, bats, rats and mice. Shown here with what's remaining of what could possibly have been a gull or pigeon on Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge.
