Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo said the United States has strengthened safeguards over signal intelligence activities under the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework.
Her remarks came after the European Commission’s release of a draft adequacy decision regarding the framework, according to a Dec. 12 news release.
“The United States welcomes the European Commission’s release of its draft adequacy decision regarding the EU-U.S. Data Privacy Framework,” Raimondo said in the release.
She said the draft decision is a critical step to address the 2020 decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union in the Schrems II case. The U.S. “implemented strengthened safeguards for signals intelligence activities, developed a new redress mechanism and updated privacy principles for U.S. organizations,” she said, according to the release
The U.S. reviewed the draft decision and looks forward to its consideration by the European Data Protection Board, the European Parliament and EU Member States, Raimondo said, the release reported. The U.S. is committed to working with the European Commission to implement the framework and to facilitate the transfers of personal data that benefit EU and U.S. individuals and companies.
