The U.S. Department of Homeland Security recently presented its 2022 year in review.

According to a news release, the U.S. faced a number of historical security issues in 2022 including, escalating numbers of ransomware and other cyberattacks, a rise in targeted violence, Russia's unprovoked attack on Ukraine, China's violations of international law, surging levels of migration, increasingly severe and frequent natural disasters and more.

“The capabilities of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security have matured and increased to meet the challenges our country faces,” Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas said in the release. “This is possible because of the 250,000 extraordinary DHS personnel who fulfill our mission selflessly, tirelessly and with integrity, often under the most difficult of circumstances. Our Department of Homeland Security is more fit for purpose than ever before, and we deliver results for the American people every single day.”

DHS responded to the challenges with leadership, new programs and capabilities, cross-component collaboration and unflinching dedication to mission. These efforts will build U.S. capacity to respond to threats in the future, the release reported.

Last year, the DHS achieved progress in mitigating and building security against cyber threats, strengthening American borders and modernizing ports of entry, ensuring a more fair immigration system, preparing and responding to natural disasters and bolstering the department's capacity to deliver for the American people, according to the release.
