Lowey Statement on 2014 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of HCA on May 21, 2013. It is reproduced in full below.

I am pleased the 2014 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act would continue our long commitment of caring for the men and women who have served in uniform, and providing the resources necessary for maintenance and construction of military facilities.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, today issued the following statement on the 2014 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act, scheduled to be marked up by the Appropriations Committee on May 20th:

"I am pleased the 2014 Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations Act would continue our long commitment of caring for the men and women who have served in uniform, and providing the resources necessary for maintenance and construction of military facilities.

"I am particularly pleased this legislation would require strong steps from the Department of Veterans Affairs to eliminate the shameful disability claims backlog and develop an integrated electronic health records system with the Department of Defense.

"I am hopeful we can keep this bill free fully funded and free of controversial policy riders that could imperil enactment.

"I am pleased this bill's allocation has not been reduced as a result of the senseless cut imposed on FY 2014 discretionary spending by Congress's failure to replace sequestration. I remain hopeful that the House majority - like the Senate - will produce Appropriations bills reflecting the level to which Democrats and Republicans agreed in the Budget Control Act of 2011."
