Lowey Statement on President Trump's 2018 Budget Request

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of HCA on March 16, 2017. It is reproduced in full below.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, today issued the following statement on President Trump’s 2018 budget request:

“The lack of detail in the President’s 2018 budget request would be embarrassing for an Administration with basic competence. But even hiding the details cannot obscure the fact that this is just another attempt to shift more economic burdens onto the shoulders of working families, by gutting services and investments on which they rely. If enacted into law, these cuts would have a disastrous impact on job security; health; safe, clean, and secure communities; and American leadership around the world."

“I will closely examine the President’s request for supplemental appropriations for defense to determine whether the request would legitimately improve readiness and address areas of need.

“The $1.4 supplemental request for Homeland Security to construct a wall on the southern border is a nonstarter - it would be a multi-year, multi-billion dollar boondoggle. This unjustified request is based on nothing more than a campaign promise."

“Congress writes the Appropriations laws that fund the federal government, and Democratic votes will likely be needed to enact these laws, just like in the 114th Congress when Republican majorities were larger in both chambers."

“The goal of this Administration is to help the most fortunate at the expense of working families, seniors, and other vulnerable populations. Democrats will not help pass laws that shift economic burdens onto hardworking American families."
