Lowey Statement on House Republicans’ Introduction of Trump Rescissions Package

The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of HCA on May 9, 2018. It is reproduced in full below.

Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY), Ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, issued the following statement on the rescissions package submitted by President Trump that House Republican leadership introduced tonight:

“The legislative text of the Trump-Republican rescissions bill confirms our worst fears. To pay for the GOP tax bill, it cuts the Children’s Health Insurance Program without reinvesting those funds in vital health care and human service programs like Head Start or biomedical research.

“The Republican bill also includes significant cuts to programs that create jobs, grow our economy, and improve the quality of life in rural communities. These cuts are unacceptable.

“In addition, I object to House Republican leadership’s apparent plan to rush this bill to the floor without either a complete Government Accountability Office analysis or Committee consideration. Spending cuts that hurt American families should be carefully considered, not rushed through to score political points."
