While the other restored and reconstructed buildings at Appomattox Court House closely resemble their 1865 appearances, this structure looks quite different than the one visible to the soldiers present during the surrender. The original Appomattox County Jail was constructed on the opposite side of the Richmond-Lynchburg Stage Road, where its footprint is today marked by bricks. The old jail burned in 1864, and work on a new jail at the site of its present location may have begun before the surrender. Construction of the new jail was finally completed around 1867.
