U.S. Representative to the United Nations Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield met today with African Union Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat and welcomed him to the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit.
Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield expressed the United States’ goal to collaborate more with the African Union on key geopolitical issues.
The Ambassador and Chairperson Faki discussed President Biden’s announcement in support of the AU’s membership in the G20, as well as the President’s support for additional African seats on the UN Security Council.
The Ambassador and Chairperson Faki also discussed matters of peace and security on the continent, including the spread of terrorism in the Sahel, the implementation of the cessation of hostilities agreement in Ethiopia, and the resolution of the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Ambassador also underscored the United States’ continued commitment to support the African Union’s critical peacekeeping and peace support operations across the continent.
