The United States applauds the passage of this amendment to provide full funding for the mandates of the Human Rights Council.
The long-established practice of the Fifth Committee is to make decisions on the basis of consensus. Yet there are times when consensus is impossible, and we must resort to a vote. This session, the ACABQ disproportionately targeted human rights mandates. These proposed funding cuts would have undermined the Human Rights Council and a core pillar of the UN Charter.
As we enter a year in which the UN will mark the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it is entirely appropriate that the Fifth Committee has restored this critical funding. Thank you.
