Funding of nearly $1.7 billion is available through two programs of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration that will modernize transit fleets with low- and no-emission buses and renovate and construct bus facilities.
The deadline for proposals is April 13 for the Low or No Emission (Low-No) Program and the Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program, a news release said. The Low-No Program is funded with $5.5 billion over five years through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Nearly $2 billion over five years will be available for the Grants for Buses and Bus Facilities Program.
“The historic funding opportunity we are announcing is helping communities across the country purchase new buses, which will cut harmful pollution and train workers for good-paying jobs,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in the release.

The Low-No Program will help transit agencies buy or lease U.S.-built zero-emission and low-emission transit buses, plus charging equipment and facilities, the release said. Approximately $1.22 billion will be available in fiscal year 2023 for grants under the Low-No Program.
Grants for the Buses and Bus Facilities Program will help transit agencies buy and rehabilitate vans, buses and equipment plus build bus facilities, according to the department. Approximately $469 million will be available in fiscal year 2023 for that program.
“Buying new buses, including many vehicles that use new technology to fight climate change, will promote cleaner, faster and safer rides as we move toward a better future,” said Federal Transit Administration Administrator Nuria Fernandez. “Thanks to the strong commitment of this administration to not leave anyone behind, we will be able to connect more people in their communities and improve the reliability of transit service.”
