Laurie E. Locascio, the director of the National Institute of Standards and Technology, has been elected to the National Academy of Engineering.
She leads NIST's efforts to advance technology, measurements and standards in the United States and prioritizes the successful implementation of the CHIPS for America initiative, according to a Feb. 8 NIST news release.
"Locascio leads NIST’s collaborative efforts with industry, academia and government to unleash U.S. innovation by advancing technology, measurements and standards," the NIST release reported.
She is also working to advance NIST’s work in emerging technologies such as AI, quantum information science and biotechnology, according to the release.
Locascio has a long history of work at NIST, having served as vice president for research at the University of Maryland College Park and the University of Maryland Baltimore before becoming NIST director. She published 115 scientific papers and received 12 patents in bioengineering and analytical chemistry, the release reported.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from James Madison University, a master’s degree in bioengineering from the University of Utah and a Ph.D. in toxicology from the University of Maryland Baltimore, according to the release. Her hard work and dedication have also earned her recognition from several scientific organizations.
