About the Hearing:

* The purpose of this hearing is to investigate the size and scope of fraud in federal unemployment programs, which skyrocketed during the pandemic, and prevented suffering Americans from receiving needed benefits, while exposing their private personal information to identity theft.

* Last Congress, Ways and Means Democrats ignored repeated calls from Republicans for oversight hearings. Chairman Smith is making this a top priority for the House Ways & Means agenda.

* Congress will hear from federal agencies charged with oversight and investigation of fraud, and efforts to prosecute and recover stolen funds. Witnesses will explain how fraudsters and international crime rings used stolen identities to target state unemployment systems and divert billions from unemployed workers.
