Thank you, Administrator Steiner, for your thoughtful remarks.
At the start of arguably the most consequential years for development since the UN’s creation, we welcome your positive and forward-looking remarks. The United States echo’s your affirmative vision for UNDP and seeks to renew and redouble our commitment to our shared mission with the United Nations and the international community.
The United States is fully committed to the implementation of the 2030 Agenda, in partnership with the United Nations and its development agencies, to defend, protect, and advance respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms; to fight against discrimination, inequity, and inequality in all its forms; and to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.
UNDP’s work is at the heart of the SDGs: expanding economic opportunity, social and economic justice, caring for our planet, good governance, and leaving no one behind, especially marginalized communities such as women and girls and LGBTQI people.
As we meet today, the global economy faces interlocking crisis, from food insecurity to debt and climate change.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Yellen spoke to these challenges during her recent trip across Africa, where she urged further action to evolve the multilateral development banks to better address global challenges like climate change, health and pandemics, and conflict and fragility, complementing these institutions’ work on poverty reduction and inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
Despite these unprecedented challenges and increasing demands on limited resources, UN agencies continue to make an impact around the world. Whether in Afghanistan or Ukraine, we want to express our deepest admiration and appreciation for the dedication, creativity, commitment, and service of frontline workers who provide assistance, promote human rights, and work diligently to build a better tomorrow.
The United States places the principles of transparency, accountability, oversight, and efficiency at the heart of our partnership with the UN to ensure results-oriented program delivery. We call on UNDP and the Executive Board to continue to uplift these principles as we identify ways to strengthen the effectiveness of our work together.
