Polio & Immunizations Response Support

OVERVIEW

USAID’s Polio & Immunizations Response Support, in partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO), assists Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population in its polio eradication efforts by strengthening national surveillance and immunization systems, and assisting in the development and implementation of Nepal’s strategic Polio Transition Plan.

HIGHLIGHT

USAID’s Polio & Immunizations Response Support has sustained Nepal’s polio free status since 2014 through active surveillance of polio symptoms and an effective routine immunization program.  Nepal has promoted a National Immunization Act and Rules that codifies and reinforces government ownership of polio eradication efforts.

USAID Promotes Quality Public Health Services:

USAID has a strong and collaborative partnership with the Government of Nepal (GON) to improve the survival and quality of life of all Nepalis. USAID supports Nepal’s response to infectious diseases such as COVID-19 and polio. Aligned with the GON’s health strategy, USAID builds on existing efforts to address the needs of women, girls, and other vulnerable groups, promoting research, and engaging other donors and civil society in health.

USAID Supports Nepal’s National Polio Eradication Program:

USAID partners with the federal government, inline with Nepal’s National Polio Strategic Plan 2019-2023, to support the integration of polio surveillance with existing measles/rubella, Japanese encephalitis, and neonatal jaundice vaccine disease surveillance programs.

USAID Strengthens the Resilience of Nepal’s Disease Surveillance Systems:

USAID, partnering with WHO, maintains a nationwide network of surveillance medical officers who support sustained surveillance efforts for detecting poliovirus transmission and routine immunization programs at the federal, provincial, and municipal levels of the health system.
