Rapid advances in biotechnology and related sciences are creating new benefits - and risks - for security and other aspects of our well-being. As these biotechnologies and capabilities - particularly those related to synthetic biology - become increasingly available and accessible, not only to researchers but also to nontraditional consumers outside of formal laboratory settings and associated oversight, it is important for the States Parties to the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BWC) to understand the security implications of those developments.
