The following press release was published by the U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service on Feb. 27. It is reproduced in full below.

Preservation and conservation of the important cultural resources of the National Park Service require expert and highly skilled specialists. Conservators meticulously work to preserve and restore objects of social and cultural significance. They work on diverse materials ranging from fine and decorative art objects to natural history specimens.

Some objects require special treatments to stablize them longterm. Treatments fall into broad categories such as stabilization, cleaning, compensation for loss, and restoration. The documentation and materials analysis that are a part of the treatment process often provide information important to the interpretation of an object.

The Orderly Book of the 1st NY Regiment, a historic military journal related to the happenings at Fort Schuyler in 1778 and 1779, was donated to the park in the early 2000s. A full transcription of the book can be found. Below is the story of how this special artifact was preserved for future generations.
