Granholm: U.S., U.K. hold 'roundtable with clean energy innovators'

The energy departments in the United States and United Kingdom announced plans to arrange two site visits for policy experts in 2023 during the third meeting of the U.S.-U.K. Strategic Energy Dialogue held Feb. 28 in London, U.K.

U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and U.K. Department for Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary of State Grant Shapps co-chaired the meeting that focused on discussion of global energy markets and addressing energy security concerns, a news release said. The countries also shared policy and financing tools available in their economies that “encourage clean energy technology advancement, demonstration and deployment.”

“It was great to join UK Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero @grantshapps at @USAinUK for a roundtable with clean energy innovators on the role disruptive businesses can play in our shared mission to achieve net zero,” Granholm said in a post on Twitter.

The U.S. and U.K. plan to continue the dialogue through working-level site visits in 2023, according to a joint statement. U.K. experts will travel to the U.S. for one, and vice versa for the other.

The third meeting of the U.S.-U.K. Strategic Energy Dialogue included talks on national and local governments’ roles “in supporting civil nuclear, floating offshore wind, hydrogen and grid flexibility and storage projects, including in ways that maximize benefits for local communities,” the joint statement reported.

Granholm and Shapps reaffirmed commitments to promote international cooperation through multilateral forums, including such platforms as the G7, G20 and the International Energy Agency, the news release reported.

Granholm and Shapps also co-chaired a business roundtable Feb. 27 in which the clean energy investment environment in the U.S. and U.K. was discussed, according to the release.

“Great to host my US counterpart @SecGranholm in London for talks,” Shapps posted on Twitter. “The move to renewables was the focus of our discussions as we co-chaired a Green Investors roundtable to help facilitate joint investment and scale-up for [UK] and [US] companies in the green energy sector.”

The bilateral Joint Action Group for Energy Security and Affordability, established in December 2022, complements the U.S.-U.K. Strategic Energy Dialogue, the joint statement said. The Joint Action Group accelerates “cooperation on short-term action to support energy security and affordability in the United Kingdom and across Europe.”
