Summary: The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is proposing to classify the State of Sonora, Mexico as Level One for brucellosis. This proposed recognition is based on an evaluation we have prepared in connection with this action, which we are making available for review and comment.
The Government of Mexico requested that APHIS evaluate and classify the State of Sonora for brucellosis. APHIS prepared an evaluation which concludes that the State of Sonora meets the conditions to be classified as Level One for brucellosis, supporting adding the State of Sonora to the web-based list of Level One regions for brucellosis. This evaluation is now available for review and comment for 60 days. The evaluation and environmental assessment are available at Regulations.gov or in our reading room. After reviewing any comments we receive, APHIS will announce our final determination regarding classification of the State of Sonora, Mexico with respect to brucellosis in a subsequent notice.Brucellosis is a contagious, infectious, and communicable disease, primarily affecting cattle, bison, and swine, and is caused by bacteria of the genus Brucella. In its principal animal hosts, brucellosis causes loss of young through spontaneous abortion or birth of weak offspring, reduced milk production, and infertility.
