Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport was closed April 12 due to flooding caused by severe weather in Broward County, Fla.
The closure of the airport caused travel disruptions and stranded passengers, according to the airport's website.
"Closely monitoring the situation in Fort Lauderdale where local officials have closed @FLLFlyer airport due to flooding on taxiways and runways. Our FAA staff are onsite to make necessary repairs to air traffic equipment and navigation aids," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said in an April 13 Twitter post.
Severe weather in Broward County resulted in a flash flood emergency and the closure of the airport, the website reported. The National Weather Service also issued tornado warnings for the area. The flooding caused road closures, stranded vehicles and power outages. The airport remained closed until April 14 due to the extensive flooding and debris on the runways.
The airport's Twitter page posted regular updates to keep the public informed.
"Due to heavy rain and windy conditions over the FLL airport, arriving and departing flight activity has been temporarily halted until the weather improves to resume safe operations. Please check with your airline for the most up-to-date flight status," the airport's Twitter page reported April 12.
"Due to the heavy rain, the main roadways entering and exiting FLL are flooded and impassable. Please do not attempt to enter or leave the airport at this time," the airport's Twitter page continued.
Fort Lauderdale declared a state of emergency due to massive flooding caused by storms, according to a report by WSVN. The flooding led to power outages, school closures and many vehicles stranded on the roads.
Emergency crews worked to rescue people who became trapped in their homes or cars due to the rising floodwaters caused by the severe weather, WSVN reported. Residents were advised to avoid any non-essential travel and to stay safe until the situation was under control. With road closures, stranded vehicles and power outages throughout the area, authorities urged residents to take precautions and follow official updates as the situation developed.
