Arizona state rep. files impeachment articles against Mayorkas: 'We owe [the American people] his removal from public office'

Arizona State Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Gilbert) has filed articles of impeachment against U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, calling on his colleagues to advance the proceedings.

Breitbart reported that the movement to impeach Mayorkas is gaining momentum in the House. Calls for Mayorkas' impeachment began increasing after the Biden administration lifted Title 42 and U.S. Border Patrol apprehended more than 10,000 migrants for two consecutive days, the highest level in American history.

"I call on House Republicans to advance impeachment proceedings against DHS (Department of Homeland Security) Secretary Mayorkas. I have already introduced the impeachment articles," Biggs wrote in a May 17 Twitter post. "The American people have waited patiently. We owe them his removal from public office."

Biggs is not alone in seeking Mayorkas' impeachment, according to Breitbart. Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) also called for Mayorkas' impeachment over the border situation and told reporters, "He should be impeached as soon as humanly possible." Rep. Ben Cline (R-VA) seconded impeachment proceedings, and in the words of Rep. Barry Moore (R-AL), "Mayorkas has done more to help the cartels and child traffickers than he has to help the American people. It is clear he is intentionally violating the law, and he must be impeached."

Fox News reports that Title 42, which allowed Border Patrol to swiftly turn away migrants at the border, ended on May 11 and consequently caused a surge of migrants crossing the southern border. Agents apprehended at least 10,300 migrants who crossed illegally on Tuesday, May 9, and over 10,000 on Monday, May 8, the news outlet said.

Officials are expecting the surge to continue now that Title 42 has concluded, the article said. Migrants are mainly staying in border cities like Brownsville and El Paso, with many camping on the streets. The Biden administration has sent additional military troops to assist Border Patrol in administrative duties as some officials predict a worst-case scenario of 14,000 migrants crossing per day.

Since Mayorkas took office under the Biden administration, U.S. Customs and Border Protection has apprehended over 5 million illegal immigrants excluding 1.5 million gotaways, as reported by Breitbart. Mayorkas is due for a congressional hearing in front of the House Judiciary Committee in July where talks of impeachment will be discussed. Breitbart reported House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) now supports impeaching Mayorkas, which is a significant move for House Republicans.

According to CNN, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has been calling for Mayorkas' impeachment for a while but said "there is a lot of renewed interest" after the end of Title 42.

Rep. Pat Fallon (R-TX) also filed articles of impeachment against Mayorkas and told CNN his constituents are "screaming" over the Mayorkas/border situation. Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told CNN he is aware of the concerns over Mayorkas but does not want impeachment to proceed for "political reasons."

In a press release from the House Committee on Homeland Security, House Republicans detailed Mayorkas' "abject failure at the border" saying, "This border crisis sits squarely on Secretary Mayorkas’ shoulders, as he has failed to fulfill his duties as Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security." Chairman Rep. Mark Green (R-TN) blamed Mayorkas for "the systematic dismantling and transformation of our border to a lawless and dangerous open border."
