This month Apple revealed a new product described as a “revolutionary spatial computer” called Apple Vision Pro that allows users to be present and socially connected while also seamlessly fusing digital material with the real environment.
“Today marks the beginning of a new era for computing,” Apple CEO Tim Cook said in a June 5 release. “Just as the Mac introduced us to personal computing, and iPhone introduced us to mobile computing, Apple Vision Pro introduces us to spatial computing. Built upon decades of Apple innovation, Vision Pro is years ahead and unlike anything created before — with a revolutionary new input system and thousands of groundbreaking innovations. It unlocks incredible experiences for our users and exciting new opportunities for our developers.”
According to the release by Apple, Vision Pro is a fully three-dimensional user interface controlled by natural and intuitive inputs including a user’s eyes, voice and hands. This creates an “infinite canvas” that goes well beyond the limits of a traditional display. It gives consumers the ability to engage with digital information differently, where they feel physically present due to visionOS. This is the first spatial operating system in the world. Vision Pro includes an Apple silicon and unique dual chip design, and an ultra-high resolution display system that includes 23 million pixels in two displays.
The release states that transforming how consumers engage with their favorite apps, as well as things like watching television shows and movies, FaceTiming, reliving memories and more, is something that adds a whole new layer to person computing. It frees apps from the constraints of a display so they can be side by side at any scale. Apple Vision Pro may even lead to higher productivity.
“Creating our first spatial computer required invention across nearly every facet of the system,” said Apple Vice President of Technology Development Group Mike Rockwell. “Through a tight integration of hardware and software, we designed a standalone spatial computer in a compact wearable form factor that is the most advanced personal electronics device ever.”
