IBM's planned quantum data center in Europe is a big step for the company and its clients.

According to Ana Paula Assis, general Manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa, this move allows for further explorations into quantum technology, according to a June 6 news release.

"Our quantum data center in Europe is an integral piece of our global endeavor," Assis said in the release. "It will provide new opportunities for our clients to collaborate side-by-side with our scientists in Europe, as well as their own clients, as they explore how best to apply quantum in their industry."

The quantum data center in Europe is aimed at granting businesses, research bodies and government organizations easier access to the latest advancements in quantum computing, the release said. The data hub is likely to be up and running by 2024, and will be equipped with several IBM quantum computing units, each containing quantum processors of utility scale.

According to the release, this new data center is set to be established at Ehningen, Germany, acting as the European cloud region for IBM Quantum. It will enable users globally to utilize its services for quantum research and development.

Reportedly, it is designed to cater to European regulation necessities in terms of data, and will be the company’s second center for quantum data, following its first in New York, the release said.

IBM's Quantum Network now comprises more than 60 European entities such as Bosch, T-Systems, Bundeswehr University and many more, who leverage quantum software and hardware through the cloud, the release reported. These clients are examining quantum computing's applicability in various fields such as energy transition, material science and others.

According to Tech Target, IBM is a leading player in the global technology industry. It offers a vast spectrum of software and hardware solutions, such as computers, storage systems and more.

Beyond product offerings, IBM provides an array of business/technology services and consulting. Tech Target said IBM is known for its innovation in technology, like helping develop the first hard drive and programmable computer.
