The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced the introduction of a new online filing tool on VA.gov. Veterans can now file supplemental claims for VA disability compensation or pension benefits online, and its aim is to provide a faster and more efficient process.

"As part of continued modernization efforts from VA, Veterans can now file supplemental claims online at VA.gov.," a July 19 news release on the VA website said. "Filing a supplemental claim is an option for veterans who disagree with a previously denied claim decision regarding VA disability compensation or pension benefits."

The online filing tool offers several benefits, including step-by-step interview-style questions to simplify the submission process, the release said. Veterans can securely upload additional evidence and save their progress to return later. The new functionality is accessible through smartphones and other mobile devices, or veterans can choose to submit claims by mail if preferred.

Veterans eligible for supplemental claims include those with new and relevant evidence not available during the previous claim decision, the release said. The new legislation, such as the PACT Act, also allows for filing supplemental claims. While providing new evidence is recommended, it may not be mandatory for presumptive conditions under the PACT Act.

The VA received important feedback from veterans, VA employees and Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs) while it was building the online application in order to improve the online experience of veterans and also ensure a smooth, secure and logical and process for submitting digital supplemental claims online.

Filing claims online reduces the wait time traditional mailed claims require because applications are received by the VA immediately instead of having to deal with the delay of physically mailed documents, the release said. An additional benefit is that digital records submitted through a secure network ensure veterans' personal information remains safe. Filing supplemental claims online will allow the VA to speedily deliver the services and benefits that veterans have earned while also safeguarding their confidential information.
